How to Use Spray Foam Insulation

Spray foam insulation has a multitude of formulations specific to certain applications and across all construction types, which typically include roof insulation, continuous insulation, interior cavity fill, and both vented and unvented attics. To find out if spray foam insulation is a good choice for your application, contact your local Service Partners branch today!

Spray Foam Insulation R-Values

Open cell spray foams have R-values of 3.6 to 4.5 per inch, and closed cell spray foams have an R-value up to 7.5 per inch. It’s important to know the recommended levels of insulation for the most effective barrier from heat transfer. Your building zone will determine how thick to apply your spray foam during installation. (R-value requirements are governed by the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) in each state or municipality. Please check with your AHJ to determine the correct code for your area.)

Different regions require different levels of insulation. This map shows the most cost-effective levels of insulation for the different climate zones in the U.S. Based on your zone, use the table to find out how much insulation you need. The higher the R-value of insulation, the more thermal insulating capacity it has. Zones 1, 2, and 3 make up the southern portions of the U.S. and have an average suggested minimum insulation rating of R-30 in attics and R-13 along floors. Zones 4 to 7, which cover the northern half of the country, suggest that attic insulation have a minimum R-38 rating and floor insulation have a minimum R-25 rating.

About Spray Foam Insulation

Spray foam insulation is a spray-applied polyurethane foam, which can provide excellent air control characteristics, increased racking strength and an overall high performance insulation solution.

What Is Spray Foam Insulation?

Spray foam insulation is a two-part spray-applied polyurethane foam utilizing a mobile rig, which combines two chemical parts controlling pressure and temperatures as the insulation is applied. It provides thermal and air control characteristics, some sound attenuation, and can increase the racking strength of the structure that it is installed on. Because of its ability to deliver on all of these performance attributes in one product, instead of a combination of several products, it is a premier all-in-one high performance building solution for contractors.

Spray Foam Insulation Benefits

Spray foam insulation is a multifaceted high performance insulation product, helping to reduce air infiltration, while providing an excellent thermal barrier, and improving construction strength where applied.

Reduction of Air Infiltration

Spray foam is an excellent insulation to seal your home, including small cracks and tight spaces in your home. Benefits may include a smaller HVAC system and a reduction in air infiltration. Spray foam insulation helps improve indoor air quality by reducing the amount of interior pollution and allergens that get in the home, as well as reducing energy consumption.

Excellent Moisture Barrier

When closed cell spray foam insulation is properly installed, it provides a continuous vapor barrier, which is your ally in controlling the transmission of moisture in a home or building. This reduces the likelihood of mold growth and damage to construction over time.

All-In-One Performance Solution

Since spray foam insulation provides a number of highly sought after capabilities all in one product, it can reduce the need for multiple materials, applications, and contractors. Spray foam insulation can help reduce high energy costs and provides an overall superior insulation product that is widely sought after by contractors across the U.S.

Increased Strength and Durability Where Applied

Spray foam insulation is a durable and versatile insulation product that can offer racking strength benefits and savings on your overall building costs when applied by a licensed professional contractor.

Spray Foam Insulation Product Types

Depending on your project, we offer open and closed cell foam, roofing foams, slab-jacking, ditch foams, agricultural foams, and polyurea coatings.

Open Cell Spray Foam Insulation

Open cell spray foam is an economical choice for residential and commercial applications depending on the regional climate zone. Open cell foams are lower density with R-values of 3.6 to 4.5 per inch, and have some air and moisture permeability. Open-cell foam is a high-expansion product effectively filling wall cavities and hard-to-reach spaces.

Closed Cell Spray Foam Insulation

Closed cell spray foam insulation is a high-density insulation that provides a higher resistance to water vapor and air, strengthening the overall construction. It offers a high R-value up to 7.5 per inch when compared to open cell foams.

Turn Key Spray Foam Rigs

Custom-built spray foam rigs are designed for residential and commercial insulation contractors. Primary builds are 16’ and 20’ trailers with either ramp or barn door models and insulated walls and ceilings in the foam compartment. Each rig includes standard Graco SPF equipment available in three versions: Eco, Pro, and Elite.

Roof Foams & Coatings

Spray Foam Roofing Systems are a monolithic system providing greater insulation, increased structural stability, and effective air-barrier. Spray foam roofs require less installation time than other roofing systems and include self-flashing around HVAC, skylights, and vents for added protection against air infiltration and water transmission.

Specialty Spray Foams

Depending upon your application, specialty spray foams can speed up your jobs by offering superior strength and easy installation while the energy savings and added structural integrity help protect your investment. Utilize spray foam in agriculture, ditch pipe laying and slab-jacking projects.
