Frequently Asked Questions

Where in a building or home are baffles normally used?
Baffles are typically installed in attic spaces. Most baffles are installed between the rafters and roof sheathing. They create a barrier of protection for the soffit vents. They prevent insulation from blocking the soffit vents, allowing for proper air flow. Insulation baffles are usually stapled in place.
Why use baffles?
Baffles are used to provide a channel for air to flow from soffits through attics. This airflow regulates the temperature in an attic and prevents the build up of moisture. Baffles are also used to prevent soffits from getting blocked by insulation and other debris.
What are the benefits of using baffles?
Baffles are rafter vents used to help improve insulation efficiencies and to reduce ice-dam formation. They keep attics cooler in the summer, which helps improve shingle life by preventing single blistering. Baffles also aid in moisture mitigation. Baffles also keep soffit vents from getting blocked by insulation and other items.
In what geographies can baffles be used?
Baffles can be used in all locations throughout the United States. The type of baffle you choose (cardboard or another material) may be dictated by your location and climate. In places where condensation is more likely to accumulate, you may want to choose higher performance baffles.
Are baffles used in residential or commercial construction?
Baffles can be used in various types of construction. They are used in the attic space of homes and light commercial businesses where the attic has soffits. Baffles are used in conventional, finished and cathedral attics. Homes or businesses with flat or tile roofs will not use baffles.

Baffle Benefits

Baffles are easy to install and improve insulation efficiency. They regulate the temperature in an attic and prolong the life of the house or business structure.

Easy to Install

Baffles are designed to fit between the rafters or trusses. They are stapled in place along the top plate, truss and roof decking using a hammer tacker or squeeze tacker. Cardboard baffles are slotted and come with a pre-scored tab for quick and easy installation.

Improve Insulation Efficiency

Baffles allow for appropriate air flow inside an attic. This mitigates moisture in the attic. It also controls attic and roof deck temperatures. Baffles are also good at preventing attic insulation from blocking the airflow in the soffits. By helping to regulate the temperature in the attic, baffles also improve the comfort of rooms near the attic.

Prolong Structure Life

Without baffles, an attic can be subject to temperature swings that can damage both the interior and exterior of a structure. Insulation baffles prevent moisture build up, which can lead to problems like mold, mildew and fungi. In the summer, baffles keep attics cooler, which can help avoid shingle blistering.

Baffle Accessory Types

Baffles are available in several types to fit all budgets and applications. Contractors often install insulation baffles as a quick and easy way to preserve attic air flow.

Cardboard

Cardboard baffles are used for ventilation, to channel cold and hot air to roof vents, and to keep insulation from blocking the soffit area. These cardboard stock baffles have been slotted and scored and are easily installed with staples. They are universal and can be used for 16″ or 24″ on center simply by folding the pre-scored tab.

Durovent Baffles

Durovent baffles are made by ADO Products. They eliminate the need for blocking material at the top plate. They are water resistant, durable, and keep out moisture and wind. Durovent baffles work well with fiberglass and cellulose insulation. They are designed to friction fit in the truss as they are installed.

ProVent Baffles

ProVent baffles are another baffle type from ADO Products. They are made from high impact polystyrene that holds up well to the pressure of spray foam insulation. The nailing flanges on ProVent baffles help close off air space along the side of the vent. ProVent baffles are good for difficult applications like re-insulation.
